In older adults, mobility limitations often coexist with overweight or obesity, suggesting that similar factors may underlie both traits. This study examined the extent to which genetic and environmental influences explain the association between adiposity and mobility in older women. Body fat percentage (bioimpedance test), walking speed over 10 m, and distance walked in a 6-min test were evaluated in 92 monozygotic (MZ) and 104 dizygotic (DZ) pairs of twin sisters reared together, aged 63-76 years. Genetic and environmental influences on each trait were estimated using age-adjusted multivariate genetic modeling. The analyses showed that the means (and s.d.) for body fat percentage, walking speed, and walking endurance were 33.2+/-7.3%, 1.7+/-0.3 m/s and 529.7+/-75.4 m, respectively. The phenotypic correlation between adiposity and walking speed was -0.32 and between adiposity and endurance it was -0.33. Genetic influences explained 80% of the association between adiposity and speed, and 65% of adiposity and walking endurance. Cross-trait genetic influences accounted for 12% of the variability in adiposity, 56% in walking speed, and 34% in endurance. Trait-specific genetic influences were also detected for adiposity (54%) and walking endurance (13%), but not speed. In conclusion, among community-living older women, an inverse association was found between adiposity and mobility that was mostly due to the effect of shared genes. This result suggests that the identification of genetic variants for body fat metabolism may also provide understanding of the development of mobility limitations in older women.  相似文献

We examined to what extent breeding insectivorous treecreepers, Certhia familiaris, affect the abundance and the mean size of their prey population on the surface of tree trunks. In order to determine foraging pressure on tree trunks, we observed the parent birds' foraging behaviour in marked squares (25Ꭱ m) at a short (10 m) and long distance (90 m) from the nest, when the nestlings were near fledging. Immediately after fledging, we measured the remaining food abundance on a sample of tree trunks near to and far from the nest. All arthropods longer than 1 mm were collected and identified to family level and their length was measured. Treecreepers foraged for significantly less time on trunks far from the nest than on trunks close to the nest (5 s vs 186 s). Consequently, treecreepers were found to deplete food abundance on trunks close to the nest. During the nesting period, parent birds removed almost twice as many spiders and other arthropods (excluding Formica ants) from the tree trunks close to the nest than from those further away. The size distribution of arthropods was the same between frequently and seldom-used tree trunks, suggesting that arthropod consumption by treecreepers was not size selective. Our direct measurements on the abundance of arthropods provide rare evidence for the ability of predators to deplete their food resources to a large extent.  相似文献

Four major hypotheses have been put forward to explain local species richness of commensal or parasitic species. The resource distribution hypothesis predicts that regionally widespread host species are able to support higher local species richness of commensals or parasites. On the other hand, the resource size hypothesis predicts that larger hosts can support more species than smaller hosts, and comparably, the resource abundance hypothesis predicts that hosts that offer more resources are able to support more species. Finally, the resource concentration hypothesis predicts that hosts that occur in high-density patches support higher species richness. In this study, we tested the first three of the above hypotheses with myrmecophilous beetles and their host ants. In addition to species richness of myrmecophilous beetles, we also applied the above hypotheses to explain the distribution of the beetles. Our data are exclusively based on an extensive literature survey. Myrmecophilous beetles live in naturally fragmented environments composed of host ant colonies and they are exclusively dependent on ants. We found that the distribution of the host ants and the colony size of the host ants had a positive effect on both the species richness and the distribution of myrmecophilous beetles. In the same way, we found that myrmecophilous beetle species that are generalists, i.e. have more than one host ant species, and thus have more abundant resources, were more widely distributed than specialist species. Thus, we found support for the hypothesis that resource distribution, resource size and resource abundance have an effect on species richness and on the distribution of species.  相似文献

The difference in urinary excretion of mammalian and plant lignans in rats was determined after oral administration of equivalent doses (25 mg/kg of body weight) of 7-hydroxymatairesinol (HMR), lariciresinol (LAR), matairesinol (MR), and secoisolariciresinol (SECO). Twenty-four hours-urine samples were collected after a single dose and after administration of one dose/day for 10 days. Eight lignans were analysed in urine extracts using a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method showing good sensitivity and repeatability. After a single dose of HMR, LAR, MR, and SECO, the main metabolites were 7-hydroxyenterolactone (HENL), cyclolariciresinol (CLAR), enterolactone (ENL), and enterodiol (END), respectively, but after 10-day exposure ENL was the main metabolite of all the tested lignans, showing a considerably higher excretion than after a single dose. Metabolic transformations of plant lignans into each other could also be observed.  相似文献

A second distinct family of anion transporters, in addition to the classical SLC4 (or AE) family, has recently been delineated. Members of the SLC26 family are structurally well conserved and can mediate the electroneutral exchange of Cl(-) for HCO(-)(3) across the plasma membrane of mammalian cells like members of the SLC4 family. Three human transporter proteins have been functionally characterized: SLC26A2 (DTDST), SLC26A3 (CLD or DRA), and SLC26A4 (PDS) can transport with different specificities the chloride, iodine, bicarbonate, oxalate, and hydroxyl anions, whereas SLC26A5 (prestin) was suggested to act as the motor protein of the cochlear outer hair cell. We report the expansion of the SLC26 family with five new members in chromosomes 3, 6, 8, 12, and 17 and mapping of SLC26A1 to 4p16.3. We have characterized one of them, SLC26A6, in more detail. It maps to chromosome 3p21.3, encodes a predicted 738-amino-acid transmembrane protein, and is most abundantly expressed in the kidney and pancreas. Pancreatic ductal cell lines Capan-1 and Capan-2 express SLC26A6, and immunohistochemistry localizes SLC26A6 protein to the apical surface of pancreatic ductal cells, suggesting it as a candidate for a luminal anion exchanger. The functional characterization of the novel members of this tissue-specific gene family may provide new insights into anion transport physiology in different parts of the body.  相似文献

The importance of lipids for cell function and health has been widely recognized, e.g., a disorder in the lipid composition of cells has been related to atherosclerosis caused cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lipidomics analyses are characterized by large yet not a huge number of mutually correlated variables measured and their associations to outcomes are potentially of a complex nature. Differential network analysis provides a formal statistical method capable of inferential analysis to examine differences in network structures of the lipids under two biological conditions. It also guides us to identify potential relationships requiring further biological investigation. We provide a recipe to conduct permutation test on association scores resulted from partial least square regression with multiple imputed lipidomic data from the LUdwigshafen RIsk and Cardiovascular Health (LURIC) study, particularly paying attention to the left-censored missing values typical for a wide range of data sets in life sciences. Left-censored missing values are low-level concentrations that are known to exist somewhere between zero and a lower limit of quantification. To make full use of the LURIC data with the missing values, we utilize state of the art multiple imputation techniques and propose solutions to the challenges that incomplete data sets bring to differential network analysis. The customized network analysis helps us to understand the complexities of the underlying biological processes by identifying lipids and lipid classes that interact with each other, and by recognizing the most important differentially expressed lipids between two subgroups of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, the patients that had a fatal CVD event and the ones who remained stable during two year follow-up.  相似文献

Previous studies on laboratory rodents, rabbits, and humans have demonstrated that adipose tissue fatty acid (FA) mobilization is selective, and its efficiency is related to the molecular structure of FAs. This study was undertaken to find out whether such preferences of FA mobilization are a general feature of mammalian white adipose tissue (WAT) and are also manifested in carnivores. Fractional mobilization of a wide spectrum of FAs was studied by gas-liquid chromatography from six subcutaneous (scapular, rump, ventral) and intra-abdominal (omental, mesenteric, retroperitoneal) WAT depots of raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) fed or fasted for 2 months. Fasting stimulated the mobilization of shorter-chain saturated, mono-unsaturated (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs). The effects of unsaturation and the position of the first double bond from the methyl end were more inconsistent. The effect of double-bond position may be due to chain shortening of longer-chain MUFAs and preferential utilization of n-3 PUFAs over n-6 PUFAs. Moreover, there were site-specific differences in fractional mobilization, the omental adipose tissue being the most divergent. The in vivo FA mobilization from the regional WAT depots of a carnivore was selective, and the molecular structure of the FA affected its efficiency.  相似文献
